Handscapes: Students spent several days practicing drawing anatomically accurate hands, and then they invented ideas for the background composition. Finally they combined their most accurate drawings of hands with a creative background and completed their final composition with color, value, and/or texture.

Monochromatic Painting (Using One Color and the Shades and Tints of that Color): Students practiced techniques in painting for several days. They explored mixing tints and shades of one color in order to show value in painting. They practiced first on basic forms and then selected a subject of personal interest to create a final monochromatic painting.

Formative Assignments: Students did the following exercises before their final monochromatic paintings.
Student Selected Color Scheme Painting: Students first created a color wheel, practiced various paint application techniques (blending, pointillism, expressive, wash, scumbling, impasto, etc.), and learned about various color schemes (monochromatic, complimentary, triad, neutral, warm, cool, etc.). Then they selected their favorite color scheme and combined it with their favorite paint application techniques and applied them to a subject of choice.
