Ceramic Project 1: Functional Ceramic Piece
In this unit, students learned about the 5 stages of clay (plastic, leather hard, bone dry, bisque, glaze fired) and the three hand-building techniques (pinch, coil, slab). We discussed the concepts of form and function, convex and concave, and art elements and principles as they apply 3D design. In this project, students designed an idea and created a construction plan for a functional object (cup, bowl, candleholder, etc.). They hand built then glazed their unique artworks.
Standard 1: VISUAL ARTS: Understand and apply art materials, techniques, and processes in the creation of works of art and understand how the visual arts communicate a variety of ideas, feelings, and experiences
Benchmark FA.9-12.1.1
Create original works of art using a variety of visual arts materials, techniques, and processes

Ceramic Project 2: Non-Functional Ceramic Work
For this project, students designed and created a non-functional sculptural piece (art for arts sake). We discussed the concepts of form and function, convex and concave, and the art elements and principles as they apply in 3D design.

Cultural Connotations
Students identified and research imagery from a culture or multiple cultures of personal interest and created a work of art that reflected their connection to and/or appreciation of this culture.

Statement Art
Students identified a real life problem hat they found significant in their personal lives, school, local, national, or global community and created a work of art based on this problem.

Artists of Influence
Students researched three artists of interest and created a slideshow about their work. Then they developed an idea for an original work of art based on one or more of the artists they researched.
